Communities have existed for millennia in the desert that extends hundreds of miles south along the edge of the Rio Grande Aquifer. Roads create a stark division here: barren desert expands east and west of this green ribbon for farther than the eye can see. Rio del Oro is an unfinished subdivision created as part of a four-decade-long land scam—a scam that most in the area suspect continues to this day. The same “lots” of land in this desert have been sold again and again by developers promising that a beautiful, green suburb will soon blossom from the desert floor. Roads and cul-de-sacs were graded in the 01970s to add illusion to the lie. Potentially, thousands of claims compete for ownership of this land surveyed by the government—our site included. Once sold in magazine ads and still being sold through email, EbM’s property in Rio del Oro is part of the area claimed by these land scams. Our site remains a contested property.
